HIS STORY

HA HA HA! Look at you. Do you really have nothing better (butter) to do than read up on some 8-bit group of college students who run around with video cameras? Of course you don't. Here you go.

Antigone Still The true origins of the group date back to sophomore English class. The assignment: make a video of the Greek classic Antigone. What's that you say? Did we make a video? Oh, we made a video.

Spearheaded by Director Paul David Benedict of Lone Tree Studios, the video brought a new level of video production to the Pocahontas Area English Department.

Out of the seven students in the group, three's interests were peaked by the possibility of creating bigger and better videos. Those three included the afore mentioned Paul David Benedict, Matthew Clark, and Chris Cook. Then, one night while trying to figure out a name for the group, eyes fell upon a star chart hanging on the wall. It is important to note that not only were there stars on this star chart, but label along with those stars were the various constellations. The highly scientific process of close-the-eyes, spin-in-circle, jab-at-wall was implemented and Centaurus Media Group was born.

RedShift StillThe next major stage for the newly formed CMG was a little projected called Redshift. The story: Civilization struggles to survive after worldwide nuclear devastation. Quite feasible for high schoolers, right? Right. Desired run-time: approx. 45 minutes. Final run-time: 112 minutes, compiled from 10+ hours of footage shot over a six-month period. Released in early August of 2003, premiering at the Rialto Theatre in Pocahontas, Iowa. This happened about 48 hours after a 48 hour editing marathon in our high school's editing lab (it was a small school in a small town, we could do those sort of things).

Then came senior year, followed shortly there after by "There went senior year."   Over summer there was the first CMG music video. Then came college.

CMG: THE COLLEGE YEARS

Ah, college...the time for rebirth, rebellion, and realization. The Centaurus Media Group was split up (well, actually there'd been some splitting before this, but you won't know the story until the book comes out in July) with the three core members going to three separate schools.

Each struggled with what seemed like vain attempts to spur video production interest in the '04-'05 year. The group collaborated over winter and summer breaks, making a couple videos here and there. The '05-'06 school year has gone slightly better in general, and it's only the beginning of what the next school year will bring.

There are Centaurus Media Groupies at three universities in the Midwest:

Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa
North Park University in Chicago, Illinois
University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa
